Laser Hair Removal Information

What is it, and how does it work?

Laser Hair Removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (Laser) to remove unwanted hair.  The lights energy is converted into heat which in turn damages or inhibits hair growth by wounding the hair follicle.  The machine that I use is a triple wavelength Diode laser.  808nm/ 755nm/ 1064nm.  This makes it suitable for people with various skin types.

You will most likely need at least 6-8 treatments to get a satisfactory result depending on the area and the density of hair and area being treated.

As with all laser hair removal you may require future follow-up visits in the years ahead as the dormant hair follicles may not present at the time of your laser hair removal sessions.  Everyone's body is different.  Grey and white hairs cannot be treated.  Blonde and red hair can now be treated.

What you need to know before booking

You will need to stop all forms of hair removal except shaving at least 3 weeks prior to laser hair removal.  No waxing, plucking, electrolysis, Nair etc.  We need to have the root of the hair present or the treatment will not be effective.

  •  You should not use any antibiotics 2 weeks prior to treatment.

  •  You should not be using Biotin as this stimulates hair growth.

  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding you cannot undergo treatments

  •  you should avoid the sun as much as possible during your treatments.  No artificial tanning as well.  Tanning beds and spray tans

  •  no Botox injections, dermal filler injections, chemical peels or microdermabrasion for 14 days before your treatment.

  • Laser Hair Removal cannot be done over a tattoo.

  • It will take more than 1 session.  You will need follow-up treatments.  It is difficult to say how many though as allot depends on your body and the area being treated.  On an average I would say between 6-8 to see 70%-90% of hair clearance and  8-10 treatments to see the hair stop growing completely.  These treatments need to be 4-6 weeks apart.

  • It is a long term reduction of hair.  You could be hair free for years after your treatments have finished.  Some people are under the idea that it is 100% permanent.  This is not the case.  There is no laser currently on the market that offers this.

Once you book, you will receive an email with a link to a form you must read and fill out.  This gives me the information that I need to calibrate the machine specifically for your skin type.

The treatment is fast and pain-free.  With a patented -4 degrees Celsius cooling tip.  You will be comfortable.

The morning of your appointment

You will need to arrive to your appointment having shaved the treatment area the night before.  Please do not put anything on your skin the morning of your appointment.  This means no deodorant, skin cream, make-up etc. on the treatment area.    You will be required to wear glasses to avoid the light damaging your eyes.  A water soluble gel will be applied to the treatment area to aid in gliding the laser smoothly across your skin.

After your appointment?

Once you are finished with your appointment you can go home and enjoy the rest of your day.  You should not have any discomfort. If you do, please reach out.  You may have redness & bumps at the treatment site that may occur, this is normal and you can apply Aloe Vera gel to help.

  • You should avoid putting on lotions or deodorant that day, but can continue your normal routine the next day.

  • Avoid hot showers, hot saunas, chlorine pools that day

  • After 48 hours you should exfoliate the treatment area a few times a week in-between your treatments.

Over the next few weeks some of your hair will fall out.  You may or may not notice depending on the area treated.  You will however notice a significant amount of hair not growing back.  Even after the first treatment.

  • Shave the area as little as possible in between your treatments.  Shaving more often can lead to more treatments having to be needed.
